Are bigger monitors really more productive?

Multiple monitors and ultrawide monitors look impressive. They also dramatically improve efficiency!

When you see someone using two monitors or a large widescreen display, you might think they are engaged in specialised tasks that demand extensive screen space, or perhaps they are simply tech enthusiasts. However, this assumption could be incorrect.

The extra display area can be advantageous for anyone, particularly those who work with multiple documents or spend considerable time in spreadsheets and in this blog we'll explore why.

We often become accustomed to the limitations of our current screen size, which can result in difficulties when attempting to position two windows side by side or constantly toggling between layers of open windows on the desktop.

Many of us have experienced the frustration of searching through various applications to locate the window we actually need. This is a common time-waster throughout the day. Dual screens can effectively address this issue.

A study by software developer Mavenlink reveals that 73% of surveyed businesses report spending over an hour each day, on average, merely switching between different applications.

Can you quantify how much ultrawide monitors boost efficiency?

create an image of an open laptop connected to an ultrawide monitor showing a productivity graphHow much can more screen space enhance productivity? Likely more than you might expect.

Research by Jon Peddie examined the advantages of using dual screens with desktop computers or laptops over several years. The findings indicated that employees across various job roles can boost their productivity by an average of 42%.

From their three studies spanning 15 years, they observed that the adoption of dual monitors increased significantly between 2002 and 2017, with a compound annual growth rate of 10% and they summarised the reasoning for this in a most succinct phrase: "The more you can see, the more you can do."

What are the advantages of multiple monitors or ultrawide screens?

Do more in less time

The most significant advantage of an ultrawide monitor is the remarkable increase in efficiency it offers. By eliminating the constant hassle of searching for and switching between the windows you need, you can accomplish more tasks in a shorter amount of time. This streamlined workflow is particularly beneficial in fast-paced environments where time is of the essence.

With multiple monitors, you have the space to keep essential programs, such as your email client or Microsoft Teams, perpetually open on one screen. This allows you to monitor incoming messages without interrupting your primary tasks.

Escape the limitations of small laptop screens

Laptops are great for portability, especially when travelling or moving between home and work (as many employees do these days). But the more portable the laptop, the smaller the screen space.

There is also the difficulty in positioning. When using them on a desk, people will often try to prop them up, but the person is still staring down at the screen in most cases.

Connecting your laptop to a monitor can significantly improve the experience and make it like working on a normal desktop PC. You can either choose to mirror your entire screen or still make use of the laptop screen for some activities while using the larger screen for others.

If you pair the laptop with the ultrawide monitor, you can dedicate the larger screen to your main applications, such as spreadsheets, design software, or project management tools, leaving the smaller screen open for monitoring messaging. This setup fosters a more fluid and uninterrupted work process, allowing you to access all your necessary applications precisely when you need them, without the frustration of toggling back and forth.

Improve side-by-side comparisons

Many tasks necessitate viewing data in two separate windows. For instance, you might be editing and comparing a completed design against the original guidelines, or extracting information from notes to incorporate into a PowerPoint presentation.

Attempting to position two windows side-by-side on a single normal-sized screen can be exasperating. You might adjust the window sizes perfectly, only to lose your setup when you need to maximise a window to access a menu or scroll.

With dual monitors or an ultrawide, you gain the necessary screen space to fully open both windows side-by-side, facilitating a smoother workflow.

Access documents while on video calls

Have you ever been in a video call where you needed to check an email or review notes, but everyone could see your screen? This can be challenging. We often prepare our screens by turning off alerts and other distractions before meetings to prevent unwanted pop-ups.

With dual monitors, you have the flexibility to select which screen to share during meetings, while keeping other applications open on the second screen, hidden from view. This is particularly beneficial if you need to check an email or send a message while sharing your screen.

Take advantage of integrated monitor docks

Many ultrawide monitors come equipped with integrated docking stations, which provide a convenient and efficient solution for managing your workspace. This feature allows you to keep all your peripherals, such as your keyboard, mouse, webcam, and other essential devices, connected directly to the monitor.

This setup is particularly advantageous if you frequently need to take your laptop with you, as it eliminates the hassle of repeatedly plugging and unplugging multiple devices. By having a single cable that connects the monitor to your computer, you achieve a tidier and more organised workspace. This streamlined connection not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your desk but also significantly reduces the time and effort required to set up or dismantle your workstation each time you arrive at or leave your desk. This efficiency can be especially beneficial in fast-paced work environments where every minute counts, allowing you to focus more on your tasks and less on managing your equipment.

Inexpensive productivity boosters

Investing in an additional display is relatively affordable when considering technology expenses. Monitor prices vary depending on size and features, but a suitable option is generally available from £200. With an average productivity increase of 42%, this investment offers an excellent return. An ultrawide monitor with an integrated dock to minimise desk clutter is priced at approximately £600.

Moreover, this upgrade is user-friendly. Once the monitor is connected and the PC is configured to recognise the extra screen, it's ready for use. Users can effortlessly move applications and documents between screens, creating the experience of a single expansive display.
