If your computer is reporting low disk space there are some easy steps that you can take yourself to clear some space (over and above the obvious ‘delete files and emails that you don’t need’).

Delete temporary files

The first is to delete temporary files. This is very simple to do. Navigate to start menu and find Settings.

Once in the Settings menu locate System.

Then find Storage.

Your computer may take a few moments to analyse the makeup of your stored data (the more you have, the longer this will take). Once you a presented with a breakdown that looks similar to the one above click Temporary files.

Select the categories of files you want to delete. You can probably delete almost everything but be careful if you select the Downloads option – that will delete everything in your downloaded folder. If there is anything in there that you want to keep be sure to move it to a more permanent location first.

Other Options

To find even more options for making space, you can return to the Storage options menu and select Cleanup Recommendations. This will give you options to remove files that you don’t use often, and uninstall apps that you don’t regularly use.

If you are still experiencing low disk space warnings then you may need to seek advice from an expert. There are myriad reasons why your computer could be low on storage that range from old profiles cluttering up your computer, to cloud storage syncing services like Dropbox trying to sync too much to your device.
